Why Use the Cascading Feature in Dynamic
Parameters?
*Cool Tip
Three solid reasons that translate into
improved results:
•
better usability
•
updated data

pertinent information
Imagine that Susan, a school supervisor,
needs to view a report about one of her
secondary schools and then head into a
meeting in 15 minutes to discuss how well
the Grade 10 class has performed in Biology,
compared against standardized tests.
The problem
essentially centers on a dynamic parameter
(the secondary school) with three cascading
parameters defining the multiple
dependencies (school year, class type, and
subject).
Since this is a dynamic list, the
information that the user sees could and
does change based on changes in the
databases.
From Susan’s perspective, all she has to do
is choose the school by name. There is no
need to remember changing codes or other
inputs. Once she chooses Moulsham Secondary,
Dynamic Parameters first accesses the latest
data captured in the data bases, and then
displays only the information you’ve defined
through cascading parameters in the value
lists while selecting a valid combination as
a starting point - grade 10, science, and
biology. Again, Susan can only choose
information pertinent to the configured set.
She will not be presented with any other
grades or class types, resulting in a clean
set of valid data.
Cascading dynamic parameters represent a
powerful tool for IT personnel to extract
dynamically changing information. By
manipulating these parameters, the IT
department gives its user community the
ability to shape how it can view
performance. This feature is very helpful
liberating information with multiple
dependencies.

Parameters can help your application, please

Case Study - Automated Packaging Systems
*Cool Customer
“When we migrated from Seagate Info™ 7.5 to
Crystal Enterprise 8.5, we lost a feature that
helped us - the ability to schedule a large
volume of reports at the same time. Luckily I
came across APOS’ InfoScheduler Add-In software
tool. It has saved us time and it has surpassed
my most optimistic expectations,” recalled
Mike Russo, Senior Programmer at
Automated Packaging
Systems.
|
 |
Tools Used:
APOS InfoScheduler
(with Crystal
Enterprise 8.5)
Background:
A global leader in designing and manufacturing
pre-opened bags-on-a-roll machinery used in the
packaging industry, Automated
Packaging Systems (APS) is known throughout
the world for its AutobagŪ products. With over
500 employees in Ohio, West Virginia and the
U.K., Automated Packaging Systems also develops
turnkey systems for its customers.
Business Issues:
• Substantial manual effort was needed to deploy
over 650 reports on an as-needed basis
• Substantial manual effort was also needed to
schedule over 200 recurring reports
• Power users were not able to deploy reports
when their users needed them, threatening to
stretch critical IT departmental resources
These challenges could easily mean higher cost, misplaced productivity, and
additional demands on the IT department because
its staff would need to spend time deploying
reports that power users were deploying.
“Scheduling and deploying the reports was a
manually intensive process and took up a lot of
our time, because Crystal’s enterprise
scheduling functionality is quite limited unless
you are scheduling a single report at a time.
Our power users in Finance were even more
concerned because they could not deploy
important reports to other members in time of
need.” said Mike Russo, Senior Programmer
for the IT group.
Solution:
• Use the APOS InfoScheduler Add-In Software
tool
When Mike Russo found out about InfoScheduler,
he wanted to know if this tool would do the job.
The downloaded demo version quickly proved that
he had chosen well. InfoScheduler turned out to
be a quick and inexpensive way to solve what was
potentially a costly problem: bulk report
scheduling tasks when needed, and at recurring
periods of time. InfoScheduler was very easy to
implement. It was even more easy to use because
it is based on Microsoft Excel. To quote Mr.
Russo: “Our power users and IT staff found
this Excel-based tool very easy to use. We
simply changed a few parameters, changed printer
assignments and destinations, hit the schedule
button and the job was done. It was that
simple.” Security is not compromised in any
way because InfoScheduler is built on the
client’s Crystal Enterprise environment, making
use of the inherent security features available
in this platform.
Results:
• Protected operational effectiveness
• Saved nearly 20 staff-hours each month
deploying reports
With InfoScheduler, APS solved the initial
problem of deploying mass reports without the
need to rework or customize their reporting
infrastructure. They were able to deploy reports
with minimal disruption all round, resulting in
continued operational effectiveness. Now, they
save an estimated 20 staff hours monthly
deploying over 850 reports because what used to
take several minutes to accomplish now takes
seconds. “InfoScheduler let us continue our
operations despite a major loss of functionality
in reporting tools. Not just the IT group, but
for the power users as well,” recalled Mr.
Russo.
